History
It was born of a precise desire: the Poor Clares of Monteluce, in Perugia, sought for their high altar an image able to unite devotion and splendor. In 1505 they entrusted the commission to the young Raphael. The master prepared drawings and a cartoon of rare perfection, but the pull of Rome and new commissions slowed the work. At his death (1520), the project was not lost: Giulio Romano and Gianfrancesco Penni, his most trusted pupils, brought it to completion between 1523 and 1525, remaining faithful to Raphael’s invention.
The altarpiece depicts the Coronation of the Virgin as a grand sacred stage: above, Christ crowns Mary amid a constellation of angels; below, the Apostles, gathered around the flower-strewn tomb, allude to the Assumption. Balance, light, and measured harmonies translate Raphael’s ideal of beauty into paint, filtered through the skill of his workshop. Along the base ran a cycle of small Marian scenes (predella), accompanying the main theme with a sequential narrative.
For centuries the altarpiece was the liturgical heart of the monastery. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, amid the suppressions, it left Perugia: today it is housed in the Vatican Pinacoteca, while some elements of the predella are preserved in other museum collections. Its story is that of an exemplary passing of the torch: the master’s idea rendered with fidelity and monumental scope by his heirs, bearing witness to the continuity of a school that shaped Italian art.
