History
This work, created in 1423 for the wealthy Florentine banker Palla Strozzi, is one of the absolute masterpieces of International Gothic art. The work, now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, is famous for its extraordinary decorative richness and sumptuous use of gold leaf, punched and worked with refined goldsmithing techniques. The scene depicts the journey of the Magi through a long procession that winds its way through idealised landscapes and cities, almost like a moving story. The artist constructs a continuous narrative: the same procession appears several times as it crosses mountains, woods and castles before reaching the Nativity hut. Among the most fascinating curiosities are the exotic animals – leopards, monkeys and camels – which reflect the taste for the marvellous typical of the European courts of the time. The Magi, dressed in sumptuous gold-embroidered robes, also allude to the magnificence of the Florentine elite of the 15th century. It is no coincidence that many scholars believe that some of the characters in the procession may be portraits of contemporary nobles. The work is also signed and dated on a refined painted frame, a rare detail for the period, which testifies to the artist's pride in a work destined to become one of the most splendid symbols of late Gothic European painting.
