History
The Adoration of the Magi is a masterpiece by Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino, still preserved in his hometown, Città della Pieve. The work was commissioned by the confraternity of the Disciplinati, known as the ‘Bianchi’, to decorate the altar wall of their oratory. The scene unfolds with great balance around the figure of the Virgin and Child, placed at the centre under a refined architectural structure reminiscent of a classical temple, a symbol of order and harmony. One of the Magi is kneeling in the foreground in the act of offering his gift, while the other two, richly dressed, stand at the sides accompanied by an elaborate procession of figures. Saint Joseph observes the scene in a contemplative manner, while the bright and expansive hilly landscape in the background amplifies the sense of depth and serenity. The work fully reflects Perugino's mature style: clear and symmetrical composition, elegant figures with sweet and contemplative faces, limpid colours and a calm atmosphere.
