History
The work, attributed to Raphael and painted for Taddeo Taddei in a Florence, was later given to Ferdinand of Austria and transferred to the imperial collections in Vienna, where it acquired the name ‘Madonna del Prato’ from the landscape depicted. Stylistically akin to the ‘Madonna of the Goldfinch’ and the ‘Belle Jardinière’, the work depicts the Madonna holding the Child Jesus while St. John is offering a processional cross. The pyramidal composition, inspired by Leonardesque models, is distinguished by its calm and familiarity, with Mary depicted in a contrasting pose that unites the symbols of the Church and the Passion of Christ. The Virgin's face radiates the landscape, and a red poppy alludes to the Passion and Resurrection.
