Estense Castle: the Prince’s Bedchambers

Estense Castle: the Prince’s Bedchambers

The first Art Restitution project

Scientific Committee: Prof. Antonio Paolucci, Prof. Nicola Marconi (Sapienza University of Rome), Prof. Charles Hope (National Gallery, London) Architectural Supervision: Arch. Marco Borella

The Context: A void spanning centuries

Since the 16th century, the legendary Camerini del Principe in the Castello Estense – once a treasure trove of the greatest masterpieces of the Ferrarese and Venetian Renaissance – had been stripped of their original pictorial soul. In 2006, the Bottega Tifernate was called upon to undertake a veritable philological feat: to heal this historical wound through the first major large-scale ‘Restitution of Art’.

The Vision

The aim of the project was not simply to produce ‘copies’, but to restore the original visual and architectural identity of those spaces. It involved recreating a lost dialogue between painting and space, restoring the chromatic depth, the vibrancy of the paint and the Renaissance solemnity that Duke Alfonso I d’Este had conceived for his private chambers.

The Philological and Material Challenge

The project presented an unprecedented challenge: to create 25 pictographs on canvas at a scale of 1:1, intended for precise reinstallation in their original locations. This required rigorous research to ensure perfect chromatic consistency not only between the individual works, but also in their intimate relationship with the natural light and architectural mouldings of the Castle.

The Workshop’s Work

Under the guidance of a scientific committee of international standing (featuring leading figures such as Prof. Antonio Paolucci and Prof. Charles Hope), the Workshop applied its exclusive method. Every single stage was carried out by hand: from the study of the original masterpieces, to the traditional preparation of the supports, right through to the application of natural pigments, to ensure absolute visual and material continuity with the past.

The Result: The Rediscovered Soul

The installation of the 25 canvases represented the technical and emotional culmination of the project. The reinstallation of the works has allowed the Camerini del Principe to ‘breathe’ once more. This project not only marked a milestone in the history of the Bottega Tifernate, but has redefined the very concept of Art Restoration, demonstrating that through study, respect and manual excellence, it is possible to restore to the world the visual unity and memory of an architectural masterpiece.
