An indelible mark: the art of remembrance at the heart of Christianity

The Context: An inscription for posterity

Inside St Peter’s Basilica, the holiest and most imposing site in Christendom, no detail can be left to chance. Even a seemingly functional element, such as an explanatory plaque, must possess an aesthetic and material dignity capable of harmonising with the polychrome marble, the mosaics and the surrounding architecture of Bramante and Michelangelo. In 2019, the Fabbrica di San Pietro entrusted Bottega Tifernate with the honour of creating a commemorative plaque to be affixed beside the venerated ‘Madonna dei Pellegrini’, with the aim of conveying its origins and centuries-old history to the faithful.

The Challenge: Absolute elegance and architectural harmony

The aim was to create a piece that would not appear out of place or ‘modern’ in relation to its surroundings. The plaque was not to be a mere information display, but a true gem of sacred craftsmanship. The technical challenge lay in ensuring perfect legibility of the text, combined with an aesthetic of absolute luxury that could withstand the passage of centuries and the gaze of millions of pilgrims without fading.

The Work of the Workshop: Pictography Meets Pure Gold

To meet this institutional requirement, the Bottega Tifernate has adapted its exclusive technology in a novel way. The master craftsmen have employed the Pictography technique not for applying pigments, but as a guide of absolute precision for a complex engraving process. The text characters and decorative friezes were finely engraved into the base and, in a subsequent stage of the highest-quality artisanal goldsmithing, masterfully filled and finished in 24-carat pure gold. The result is a visual contrast of dazzling elegance, in which the light of the Basilica sets the reflections of the pure gold aglow.

The Result: A lasting mark in history

Unveiled and installed on 9 February 2019, the plaque has blended perfectly with the solemn atmosphere of the Basilica. For Bottega Tifernate, this project represented a mark of unrivalled prestige: it demonstrates the company’s ability to create elements of institutional design and signage of the utmost luxury. Having installed a permanent work, engraved in 24-carat gold, within the nave of St Peter’s is an achievement that very few companies in the world can boast in their historical record.
