The Porziuncola Nuova

The Porziuncola Nuova

The Porziuncola in San Francisco

In 2008, Cardinal William Joseph Levada and Angela Alioto, Deputy Mayor of San Francisco, entrusted Bottega Tifernate with a remarkable mission: to recreate the paintings of the Porziuncola for the replica of the chapel built in California.

Over two years of meticulous work, a team of 14 master artists collaborated closely with architects and builders to revive one of the most sacred spaces of the Franciscan tradition. The paintings were executed almost entirely in front of the original chapel at Santa Maria degli Angeli, ensuring absolute fidelity to its colors, light, and spiritual atmosphere.

More than 140 square meters of frescoes and panel paintings were recreated, including the starry vault and Giottesque fragments that grace the original walls. The result is not a copy, but a true pictorial rebirth — a dialogue between centuries, crafted with the same devotion and technique of the masters of the Renaissance.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI granted the new chapel, named “Porziuncola Nuova”, the rare privilege of the Plenary Indulgence — making it the fifth site in the world to receive it. Today, the chapel stands as a living symbol of faith and artistry, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across the United States.
