Murales for Albaredo per San Marco
The ‘Open-Air Museum’ in Albaredo: Historical memory and extreme resilience: open-air frescoes in the Alpine climate
Client: Local Authority / Mayor Patrizio del Nero Sector: Public Art / Urban Regeneration / Outdoor Design
The Context: Public Art and the regeneration of historic town centres
Bottega Tifernate’s expertise is not limited to luxury interiors or the walls of major museums, but extends strongly to Public Art and large-scale urban regeneration projects. Working in close collaboration with local authorities, the workshop intervenes to transform historic villages into veritable ‘open-air museums’, restoring a voice to the identity and soul of these places. An approach that combines fine craftsmanship with the enhancement of the local area.
The Project: From archive photography to a new fresco
The most emblematic example of this vocation is the grand, multi-year project undertaken since 2008 for the Alpine municipality of Albaredo per San Marco (Sondrio). Under the guidance of Mayor Patrizio del Nero, the Bottega was entrusted with the task of translating the village’s entire historical memory into paintings. Starting from a meticulous study of old black-and-white archive photographs, the Umbrian masters conceived and created a vast cycle of entirely new frescoes, bringing to life, in colour, moments of daily life, ancient crafts and the historic landscapes of the village.
The Technical Challenge: Engineering Stability in the Face of Extreme Weather
Permanently installed along the streets and integrated into the façades of buildings, these works have not only enhanced the urban landscape but have also provided an extraordinary demonstration of the workshop’s engineering expertise. Exposed for over fifteen years to the harsh and severe Alpine climate — enduring continuous cycles of frost, snow, rain and blazing sun — the frescoes still maintain absolute chromatic and structural stability to this day.
The Result: A Manifesto of Durability for Outdoor Design
The case of Albaredo per San Marco irrefutably confirms that the Bottega Tifernate’s ‘state-of-the-art’ reproduction and design is capable of withstanding the wear and tear of time and the harshness of nature. This project stands as a key case study for landscape architects, urban planners and public authorities seeking guaranteed, timeless and monumental outdoor artistic solutions.
